Maekhu Municipality
1. Historical Background According to its legend, the ancestors were formerly known Lawa, the native residents, who settled down in the Lanna Thai kingdom during 1557-1617. Later on, various folk tribes began their living in the areas, namely, Tai, Ngiao, Karen and others under the Burmese administration. Maekhu, located in Mae Pong-Maekhu, was under the responsibility of Chiang Mai in the reign of King Mahawachiraprakarn (1789). The area was ruled by Tao Chomphu, a representative of Chiang Mai. Maekhu, the name of this area, was combined by two words like Mae (a tributary of Mae Kuang river) and Khu (swamp, pool, or lake full of water throughout the year). Accordingly, Maekhu means the place where water is contained. The area was originally the source of food and waterways of elephants, horses, cattle and other birds. When more people settled down in the area, Maekhu later became the best living place for a Maekhu village, Moo 2.
